All Hail Benefit Brow Bar Queen Hilary Foote

It’s official – my eyebrows have been touched by a Queen. The Benefit Brow Queen that is, Hilary Foote.

Hilary, who happens to be one huge bundle of friendly, gorgeous fun in a small package – the type of person you’d want to be your best friend (yes, fo lyfe) – is Benefit’s Global Brow Expert, and was kind enough to jet over from San Francisco to spread the Benefit Brow love.

So what does being Benefit’s Global Brow Expert entail? Personal appearances, media interviews, product development, global brow training, private A-list clients (she couldn’t and wouldn’t tell me who!) and generally having mad eyebrow skillz.

“At Benefit we are all about giving a consistent brow shape, measured to your individual face. No matter where you go, and everyone travels so much these days, LA, New York or Hong Kong, we want women to be confident that they can get a consistent brow shape at one of our bars every time.”

This brow measuring system is a winner. The three points of the brow can be accurately measured to your face shape and natural brow and bone structure.

I had a chat with Hilz (yeah, she told me to add her on Facebook, so I can totally call her that) while she was tending to my overdue brows and got her to answer my brow Q’s.

What are some common mistakes people make with brows?

Creating an arch that’s too round, which is actually aging to the face, having brows that are too thin, especially when they taper thin and arch too rapidly – I call them sperm/tadpole brows! Another is starting the brows too far away from each other, so that there is a wide gap between them, this can actually make your nose look larger and wider.

What you should really remember is to stick with brows that suit you, don’t use shaping to follow brow trends. You can use makeup for that; fill them in darker, thicker, powder them lighter. If you follow shaping trends, you might end up with a look that is totally wrong for you that will affect the look of your whole face.

A common complaint I get from friends is that their eyebrow is dead straight, and has no natural arch. How can they achieve an arched look?

Trimming the brow hair can really help with this, along with removing a thin line of hair from the top of the brow where it begins, and then under where the arch should be, which gives the brow a subtle tilt and will create that beautiful arch. A lot of people are wary of waxing from the top of the brow, but when done correctly, it works beautifully.

And what about the hair/eyebrow colour rules?

Ah yes! Your brows should always be the colour of the darkest part of your hair. For those that have naturally very dark hair and go blonde, you’ll have to try for a colour that’s somewhere in-between, but it will have a very dramatic look. I don’t really like to reccommened tinting the brows lighter, because when you bleach the brow it tends to give an orange tint – it never really looks right.

Which celebrity do you think has the best brows?

For blondes, definitely Kate Hudson, and Nicole Kidman. Who else? Brunettes; Anne Hathaway has amazing brows, so does Penelope Cruz, Keira Knightley and Camilla Belle. Oh – also, Christina Hendricks from Mad Men, she loves Benefit. The makeup artist from Mad Men actually uses a lot of Benefit makeup on the show.

And whose brows would you most like to get your hands/tweezers on?

Oh, Michelle Obama! She is such a gorgeous, beautiful and kind lady, but her brows make her look hella mad! I would love to sort that out.

(Please note, indirect quotes)

After all that chit-chat, my brows were done and Hilary passed me the mirror – oo la la they had never looked better! I was in love, wishing to freeze them like that forever so another hair never grew.

Thank you very much to Benefit for the opportunity to meet the amazing Hilary, she is fantastic, along with the whole Benefit team. You guys need to starting bottling and selling that superb sweet-sherbet first-rate kind of fun personality – forget the makeup! Oh, no don’t. I love that too!

Coming up soon: Benefit’s 3-point brow measuring system, and a vanity pic of my wonderful Hilarized-brows. Sorry, has to be done!
