Dear Avon, RE: Smooth Minerals Lip Tint

Hey Avon,

I’m loving the product but think you’re going to confuse people with a name like Lip Tint! See, I posted not too long ago on Lip and Cheek Tints and this is definitely not one of them. I would say more of a sheer lip colour? A tinted lip balm? Kinda like the Bobbi Brown Treatment Lip Shine SPF I’ve also been raving about. Yep, it’s like that. But at only $14.99, you’re more affordable…

Don’t get me wrong, I’m loving the smooth and creamy formula, long lasting hydration and sheer colour with just the subtlest shimmer. Really, you’re a handbag fave. I wear Smooth Nude the most, as it’s great for adding hydration, sheen and just a wash of natural colour that compliments my natural colourings. Perfect for pared-down, no-makeup-but-makeup days.

That’s it on the right. It’s come out quite red, but it doesn’t on the lips. This is a few swipes back and forth, otherwise it would have been too sheer. Smooth Pink is on the left, which is also currently in the Black Hole aka handbag.

So bravo Avon, I love the Smooth Mineral Lip Tints just like I love the Smooth Mineral Liquid Foundation. I just wish you named them differently, I’d hate for potential customers to get confused!

L’Oreal Studio Secrets Smoothing Resurfacing Primer

When talking to friends about makeup, primer is one of the most asked about products on the market. People either have no idea what it is, don’t know how to use it or think it’s a marketing ploy aimed at eating your dollars.

While the function of most primers is the same (a barrier between your skin and makeup, acting as a base for your foundation), one of the most confusing things I find is all the different types available! Pore-reducing, illuminating, SPF-inclusive, mineral, smoothing – the list goes on. Like all skin care and makeup options, it’s about finding a solution to your issue.

I personally like to mix and match my primers, depending on the time of day, the type of makeup I’ll be using and how long I’ll be wearing it for. One that I’ve recently been getting to know a little better is the L’Oreal Studio Secrets Professional Smoothing Resurfacing Primer.

Looks can be deceiving. While it’s only 15mls, you only need the tiniest amount to make a big difference to your makeup routine. After tapping my fingers on the top of the strawberry-mousse looking primer and using outward circling swipes, my skin felt like the softest, slippery velvet thanks to the silicone oils. Oh, did my foundation glide on or what?! Another bonus was the larger pores around my nose and forehead looked and felt more even. There’s nothing worse than a great foundation job only to find that after a few hours, your pores look like open wells, just drinking it up. With this primer, it feels like any little pore dips or fine lines are ‘filled in’ and made to feel smooth and soft. Don’t over-apply though, or you may find it will ball up, although you can just brush those away.

Be careful, especially now it’s summer, as this primer doesn’t contain any SPF. Like I said, there’s so many different options on the market, it’s just about mixing and matching to make it work for you. So, you might choose a moisturiser with SPF, or use a foundation that contains it. Easy!

Have you tried this primer? What did you think?

Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure

Complete Salon Manicure? You mean, including suspect looking pieces of grot on the floor and generally unfriendly staff, making you feel like you’re part of a production line of cattle? Hrm, maybe that’s just the salons I can afford to go to! That’s where Sally steps in, making DIY mani/pedi’s (or at least the polish part) easy, quick and complete.

I stumbled across this bottle in a good old fashioned Priceline-peruse, looking for a polish that wasn’t too expensive, was long lasting and came in a shade that was appropriate for my new job. Bright corals and reds I had, something a little more subdued, not really.

Then I found the Sally Hansen stand, with the flashing NEW sign above this Complete Salon Manicure and my purchase power was piqued. The fact that there was three dollars off the range helped too, I’m sure! (Normally about $16.95 I think) The Complete Salon Manicure claims to be everything you need for a perfect manicure in the one bottle. “All 5 Steps of a Salon Manicure in 1 Bottle; Base Coat, Strengthener, Growth Treatment, Color, Top Coat.” Impressive, Sal. The wider than usual brush made application a breeze, and multiple coats were easy to do as it dried quickly.

The first time I wore this manager-pleasing-yet-pretty shade ‘Shell We Dance?’ (a light, ballet-slipper pink) it lasted nine days before needing to be taken off due to some chipping at the edges. Yes, the tips had worn slightly, but it was only noticeable on closer inspection. Plus, undoing and doing clasps up all day does take a toll on the polish.

So, I’m back for a second round and extremely pleased with Sal’s efforts on my nails. Love the fact that I don’t have to worry about base and top coat too! ‘Stock up on the essential shades in this one’, I would say if you asked me.

Review: Wondercap

If there’s something I like doing more than face masks, it’s definitely hair masks. I’m always after super smooth, just-gotta-touch-it hair. There’s nothing better.

So naturally my ears (and frizzy fly-aways!) pricked up when I received an email about a wonder accessory; the Wondercap. Am I interested to try? Heck yes!

The Wondercap is a gel-filled shower cap with a thick elastic band at the bottom to make sure it holds tight. After zapping it in the microwave for a few minutes, I popped it over my washed, shower-capped and mask-applied hair for 10 minutes…and more. Included in the WonderCap pack is their hair moisture mask Guardian Angel (and the plastic shower cap). It’s great for a basic hair mask but I love the results of the Wondercap even more when used with my favourite masks. That’s the beauty of Wondercap; depending on your hair needs at the time, you can switch masks, yet get more out of them by teaming with the Wondercap’s intensive and insulating heat, which helps the mask ingredients penetrate further into the hair shaft.  It’s like a much better, longer lasting version of the hot towel on your head at the hairdresser’s basin.

The warm and gooey feeling is so relaxing, it’s the perfect time to slap on a face mask too, lie down and enjoy. I was really surprised by how long the WonderCap holds its heat, so you have a lot of relaxing time, maybe grab a mag or a book too!

I caved in to Dad's repeated and chuckling requests for a photo.

For $39.95 - you could be this lady. BYO bubble bath...

The result? Extra silky hair! Can’t wait to keep trying this out with all my different hair masks!
